THE ATLANTIC MULTIDECADAL OSCILLATION (AMO) The AMO, like the PDO,wholesale iphone 5, is a 30 to 35 year phase of warmer/cooler waters over the Atlantic ocean. In a warm phase, which we have been in since 1995, the potential for more major hurricanes increases due to above normal water temperatures over the Atlantic. A positive AMO produces a strong Gulf Stream along the eastern North American coast line, which produces a strong thermal gradient. When I started this forecast, I wanted to see if there is any link to the influence of stronger tropical disturbances and blocking over the North Atlantic. I think I found that link in this case. When the AMO is positive, the potential increases for more storms over the western Atlantic and a higher potential for blocking. The blocking usually comes in the form of a negative NAO. The pattern of a positive AMO tends to force tropical disturbance towards the north in the late fall and winter months, which can enhance the upper low at the 50/40 bench mark. Thus the connection between an active tropical Atlantic and the pattern in the north Atlantic. This is only a theory, but I think this will play out to be an important influence this year given the lack of a strong Pacific jet to break up the blocking over the northern latitudes.

Top Of The World Last year I learned an important lesson on how the stratosphere can play a huge role in determining how the winter will play out over North America. This time, I started my winter forecast at the stratosphere over the North Pole. This is why I waited until the end of the month to post this winter forecast. This year's temperatures to this point are much warmer than last year and have not shown any hint of going extremely below normal as last year. This observation is extremely important. When the stratosphere is warm, the layer pushes down on the troposphere. This action compresses the lower atmosphere and produces a favorable environment for cold air to develop. This is a very basic explanation, however I want everyone to keep this in mind. This year, the trends at the stratosphere in late October have kept the coldest air over Siberia, while the warmer air temperatures have been found over northern Canada. This would suggest a potential for warmer conditions at the surface over Siberia and a more likely potential for a ridge to be sustained at 500 MB over this location. Meanwhile, the warmer air at the stratosphere over Canada would support a cold air mass at the surface and a negative Arctic Oscillation. So we start with the idea this winter that the upper atmosphere will be more conducive for a negative AO over North America and better support for a ridge over Siberia. This would lead to a sustained trough over central Europe and eastern Asia. I also hypothesis that the coldest air over northern Hemisphere will be over North America this year and not over Asia like last year. A strong reminder that last year when the warmest stratospheric temperatures were over Asia, that China had one of the worst winters in history for that region. The observations over the stratosphere will be extremely important going into November and any substantial fall of temperatures below normal will drastically alter the winter forecast. However, at this time I have not seen any trend that would indicate the extreme conditions from last year nor any sign of the drastic cooling from other years.

THE ENSO AND THE PDO: The most important development in the Pacific this year is the lack of a defined ENSO phase as the Pacific features neither an El Nino nor La Nina. The fact that there will be no driving ENSO impact on North America means that other key features like the Arctic Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and the Eastern Pacific Oscillation will be more important features to keep an eye on. However, the atmosphere is still feeling the effects from the strong La Nina experienced just a few months ago. This has produced a strong negative PDO, which will be a very important feature for North America. However, before we go into the PDO, let's look at what is occurring right now around the Northern Hemisphere. This year we see a lot stronger blocking features setting up over the northern Atlantic and over the Pacific. In years where the Pacific jet stream blasts through the Pacific and into the western coast of North America, these blocking features can not materialize. With weaker trade winds this year, the ability for the Pacific jet stream to intensify will be diminished. What does the negative PDO suggest though? Currently, the PDO appears to be entering into a "cool" phase which can last up to 20 years. The cool phase of a PDO has an underlying La Nina impact on the entire upper level pattern of the Pacific and North America. Under the cool phase of the PDO, the sub tropical jet stream does become more active, which will lead to the potential of several disturbances cutting through the Gulf Coast and over the Southeast. The PDO state will be a key factor in my opinion however, I wanted to compare what the atmosphere looks like in a cool phase of the PDO and a more "active Atlantic" period.

A NEGATIVE PDO AND A POSITIVE AMO IMPACT When combining the influences of a negative PDO regime (active subtropical jet stream) with a positive AMO regime, the result is a high potential for precipitation along the East coast, including a higher potential for Nor' Easters. Usually, the trend in these periods is for more coastal storms, which can lead to a lack of precipitation over the Ohio Valley through the Great Lakes. The warmer air over the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast will produce strong rising air currents at the lower and mid levels, which will produce a favorable environment for cold air to rush towards the coast line. The year that best matches the current stratospheric conditions, PDO conditions, and AMO conditions continues to be 1960/61, which is one of the top 10 snowiest winters in the forecast area.

Combining All The Pieces: Now I think it is time to combine all the pieces and put this forecast together. I believe first that the stratosphere this winter will be much more favorable for high latitude blocking and specifically supporting a negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation this winter. Given the trends this late fall of the coldest stratospheric temperatures over Siberia and western Asia, there will be strong support for above normal temperatures and a persistent ridge over the north-central Asia. The strong ridge over central Asia, which is supported by stratospheric conditions, will also lead to the development (in fact this has already been seen the past month) of a constant negative Eastern Pacific Oscillation (EPO). A negative EPO is a strong indicator and teleconnection of a ridge over the western coast of North America and a trough over the eastern third of North America. The negative PDO regime strongly suggests a more active sub tropical jet stream. Due to the blocking that will be supported at higher latitudes, we can expect to see a defined split in the Polar Jet stream, with a great deal of moisture and disturbances moving through Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and into the Southeast. We have already seen hints of the developing sub tropical jet stream this fall when looking at the water vapor satellite images the past few weeks. The negative PDO regime along with the positive AMO phase has been shown to support enhanced high latitude blocking and increase cyclogenesis off the East coast, specifically from the Carolina coastal waters towards the Canadian Maritimes. The warm or positive phase of the AMO also exhibits more energetic tropical disturbances, which enhances mid and high latitude low pressure systems. The enhancement, in theory, should also strengthen the upper low over the Northern Atlantic which would build the ridge over Greenland and thus produce a strong negative NAO structure. The positive AMO phase also produces a stronger thermal gradient along the East coast, which leads to more intense coastal storms should other factors contribute to favorable atmospheric conditions. The closest year that matches all of the described ingredients going into this winter is 1958/59 and 1960/61 although neither is a perfect match.

The North Atlantic Oscillation The phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is going to be extremely important this winter. The North Atlantic Oscillation, when negative, produces a strong blocking regime over eastern Canada and the north Atlantic. When negative, strong Canadian high pressure tends to lock over New England, produce strong cold air damning. Meanwhile, low pressure systems along the coastal plain tend to move slower and closer to the coast. The combination of the cold air along the coastal plain and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream produces a strong thermal gradient that can lead to significant intensification of the surface lows. This year,Cheap Nokia, I believe we will see a negative NAO regime. The positive AMO pattern combined with a negative Arctic Oscillation will lead to a favorable negative NAO pattern. The potential for strong storms to develop off the East coast will support the potential for those storms to build a strong ridge over Greenland and eventually northeastern Canada. The idea here is that the constant feed back of this pattern will lead to a sustained block over northeastern North America.

Expected Storm Tracks: No winter has one constant storm track as pattern usually relax after a period of significant amplification. As a result, I wanted to cover a couple of basic patterns that I think we will see from November on through March for 2008/09.

-PNA and + NAO patterns This pattern can be expected generally after a strong -NAO phase in the pattern. The - PDO La Nina like influence on the overall pattern will take hold and allow for the weak ridge that will be present through the winter over Cuba to build throughout the Northeast. This type of storm track usually will "reload" and amplify the blocking mechanisms over the higher latitudes and allow for a negative NAO to redevelop. That is the issue at hand when many forecasters and weather enthusiast start to get stuck on look at the PDO and only the PDO or just the ENSO state. What we all must try to grasp is how all of these synoptic features work in concert with each other. After all, the atmosphere is not a stand alone model. All features have direct and indirect impacts throughout the Earth. Noting that important aspect of understanding the atmosphere, I will attempt to tie together the developments and trends of Pacific pattern, stratospheric temperature and height anomalies and trends, and the trends and develops of the Atlantic pattern. Also, by learning from mistakes from previous years along with this year, I will attempt to give a view of the winter pattern along with a few various storm tracks that I think are likely. The Eastern Pacific Oscillation: Now I'm going to take another step forward. With the assumptions I have laid out above, we can assume that a ridge will be a constant feature over Siberia, which would support a trough over the eastern coast of Asia. The trough over eastern Asia is also supported by features at the surface, namely sea surface temperatures. The sea surface temperature anomalies along the eastern coast of Asia are all above normal, which suggest an impressive area of rising air. With the idea that a constant clash of the relatively colder air over central Asia interacting with the warm waters over the western Pacific, there will be a high potential for strong cyclogenesis off of eastern Asia and over the Japanese coast line. The potential for a constant trough position over eastern Asia and Japan produces a negative EPO index. When the EPO index falls into the negative, a trough is the result over the eastern United States. Due to the high potential for a constant "clash" of strong air masses over this region of the world, I hypothesis that we will continue to see a strong negative EPO through this winter, which will be an important indicator on when to expect cold out breaks and winter storms.

CONCLUSION: This winter will be the first winter in which we will be in a cool phase of the PDO and a warm phase of the AMO, which will likely lead to some very interesting winter storms this year. High latitude blocking and a split Polar Jet stream will be the many themes this winter along with the question of timing disturbances with each event. I expect that the New York City and Philadelphia metro will have a winter with slightly below normal temperatures overall from December through March. I expect a period of brief warm conditions in early January followed by a return to cold conditions for late January through March. There is a high potential for above normal snowfall for both the New York City and Philadelphia metro areas this winter. This year will also exhibit more coastal storms and an important influence on coastal front structures for each coastal storm event. In other words, cold air damning processes will be very important in the meso-forecasting aspect of these storms. I don't like to give snow fall totals for specific locations cause I think these are a shot in the dark to be honest. However, for the sake of avoiding the questions I'll get ahead of time, I think that Philadelphia and the New York City metro areas will average 35 to 50 inches this year, on the lower side of that range along the coast and higher over the interior.

Think back to the 1970's and consider there was no internet, no readily available satellite data. No way to watch the developing ENSO states or look at the temperature and pressure changes of the stratosphere. With all this new technology, we have seen an explosion of new or revised teleconnection indices and a better understanding of how each index can have an impact on certain regions of the globe. For example, any person can now look at over 13 different index readings describing the various states of the atmosphere. How was do all these different indices mean when they play off each other?

+PNA, -NAO Pattern: This pattern keeps the subtropical jet stream suppressed over Mexico, but can have some interaction with the northern branch of the jet stream over the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Disturbances in this pattern have the potential to move through the CONUS and specially over the Southeast much slower, which gives ample time for the potential of phasing or optimal development of conveyor belt structures in the storms. The strong blocking over northern Canada supports strong cold air damning along the Eastern sea board, which gives the Northeast and Mid Atlantic the most optimal potential for heavy snowfall. The negatives with this pattern is that timing is essential with the sub tropical and polar disturbances. In some cases, there will be times where the trough axis may be too far east or west for an optimal storm track for the I-95 corridor.

I get a lot of questions from subscribers to taxlienlady.com that want to know how they can purchase tax liens or tax deeds through the mail. They specifically want to know about left over tax liens and tax deeds. These are tax lien certificates or tax deeds that are "left-over" from the tax sale. In other words no one bid at them at the sale and they were struck of to the county, state, or municipality. In most states if the delinquent tax property is not sold at the tax sale, it is struck of to the county or municipality. A few states allow the assignment of tax lien certificates or tax deeds to investors. There are pros and cons to purchasing leftover or assignment liens or deeds from the county.

In spring of 1984, I began a two season internship with Def Jam's distributor. By fall quarter, I was a college rep. During Def Jam's first decade, I marketed and promoted every record released through the pipeline. This included music by the distributor's affiliated Epic label. Epic was born to CBS Records (a division of CBS, Inc.) during the early 50s. It was a cute little Classical/Jazz label and grew to be a strong, healthy major label with many active body parts (Rock, R&B, Country). Epic picked up other siblings. One of them was T-Neck Records. An influential Soul/R&B/Funk collective of the 50s, 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond the new millennium terrain, The Isley Brothers ran a music empire tucked inside this fully-functional sibling unit's clothes. With affiliations everywhere and credits that include the timely debut of Hip-Hop players like Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Scott La Rock, DJ Red Alert, and countless other faces hidden in the trenches, Rush was on a mission to conquer the world. The first-generation of Rap and Hip-Hop spawned a godfather, Russell Simmons, in addition to all these other creative talents. Collectively and in unison, they helped to centralize the cultural origins and sound of this music for an evolving world. The second-generation leaders of this new movement would include Russell's little brother Joseph, who along with Darryl McDaniels and the late Jason Mizell, made up Run-DMC: the first artists of their kind to go platinum by selling a million Rap records on Profile Records. This was just the beginning; Def Jam Recordings was on the way.

During the early to mid '70s, visionaries like Kool DJ Herc introduced new ideas to the way music was played. Between all of this 'promoting' (as a college rep), I managed getting an introduction to Russell Simmons at a Jack The Rapper convention in Atlanta by Columbia's national director of Black music promotion, Miss Mike Bernardo, who is such a sweet lady. At this time, she was next in line to the vice-president of Columbia's national promotion department: Vernon Slaughter and Mike Bernardo were responsible for the overall performance of Columbia's Black radio and club promotion department. Vernon later became one of Atlanta's top power brokers. He was LaFace Record's first general manager, personally signing artists like Toni Braxton to the label. He later became a key player at a law firm headed up by powerhouse entertainment lawyer Joel Katz, and was the legal muscle behind many artist deals, movie soundtracks and no telling what else!

By 1996, PolyGram bought another 10%, and in 1998 the Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired PolyGram Group Distribution (PGD) to become the world's biggest record label. After a series of major operational changes, longtime staffers Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles severed ties with Def Jam, which by now had grown to include other hot labels like Atlanta-based Def Jam South (headed up by The Geto Boys' Mr. Scarface), Disturbing Tha Peace (Ludacris), Def Soul, Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Roc-A-Fella. Though DMX's product was released through Def Jam, his Ruff Ryders crew got a label deal with Interscope. In the post Cohen/Liles era, former LaFace/Arista big-wig L.A. Reid re-appeared at the helm of the big ship. Then, multi-platinum rapper Jay-Z became the new chief of Def Jam (now part of Island Def Jam Music Group), proving that he too, could do what Rap music guru Russell Simmons' legendary rapper Kurtis Blow said he wanted to do: 'Rule The World.'

I'm being told to nix the trip down memory lane and stick to the script, so it's back to the original 'bad boys' of 80s Rap. Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay opened up Pandora's box with their classic hit "Rock Box." I got a premonition of what was around the corner for Rock and Rap early on: sampled 'guitar crunches' fused with 'dem phat Hip-Hop beats, boyee!' Then the crystal ball revealed something else to me - up jumped Def Jam Recordings, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys, all using overdriven guitar sounds riding along with the big,Cheap iphone 5, deep 808 beat that caused car trunks (and the inside of your body) to vibrate.

'Creatives' and 'infamists' among the likes of Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, The Bomb Squad and producer Marley Marl locked themselves up in 'Big Apple laboratories' coming up with the next lethal mix of sound. When released, Def Jam and the 'Sound of Marl' quickly put music listeners into a 'yoke' as concoctions they whipped up became highly potent chemicals on the proverbial 'periodic music table of elements' upon hitting the airwaves; through radio station, mobile and club DJs. I cannot over-emphasize it enough: 'BIG UPS' to these guys! After the creative synergy of vocalists, musicians and producers, DJs are credited as being one of the most direct pipelines to exciting new music. You should take note that "DJ" makes up the initials of Def Jam. Now let's keep the record playing; teacher's not through with today's lesson yet...

Founder Russell Simmons parted from his share of the company in 1999, after the Universal Music Group made him a $100 million offer that he couldn't refuse. We're not talking pesos here, folks! Let's breeze through a few landmark events regarding Def Jam Recordings: In 1983, the company was founded by Russell, who was called "Rush" when he was business partners with one Rick Rubin. Before this form of osmosis occurred, Simmons 'did the business' behind pioneers like Kurtis Blow, the first Rap artist with a major record deal. He signed on with Mercury Records; it was a part of the PolyGram distribution machine. The label went on to forge a long-lasting relationship with Kurtis Blow,There's a lot here, Russell 'Rush' Simmons, and his growing company.

Another sibling was Portrait Records. By the 80's, Portrait had sold millions of records by major stars like Cyndi Lauper, Sade and Stanley Clarke. Since Epic was the oldest kid, it acquired a firm place in history as the foundation that supported the throne of none other than the King of Pop music, Michael Jackson. As a matter of fact, the former lead singer of Motown's Jackson Five actively participated (along with wildly colorful CBS Records group president Walter Yetnikoff) in the disbursement of CBS' unwanted offspring (CBS Records, Inc.) to the Sony Corporation in 1988. By 2004, Sony Music Entertainment had consolidated its monster Columbia and Epic labels, then merged with another major record label: BMG. On the Internet, iTunes was selling millions of digital downloads. But that's a story for later. Stay tuned.

Sylvia Robinson synergized her abilities as a singer, musician, producer, and record executive to take her whole game to another level. As a key player at All Platinum Records, she had a hand in Shirley & Company's 1975 hit "Shame Shame Shame." This became a top dance song, and hit #12 on the Pop charts. By 1979, Englewood, New Jersey's Sugar Hill Gang busted a big move by releasing a classic, "Rapper's Delight." In the background were Sylvia, Joe, and their Sugar Hill Record label. Passing their genes on to son Joey, Sugar Hill's West Street Mob went on to release hits like "Ooh Baby" and "Sing A Simple Song/Another Muther For Ya." Other aces in the deck included groups called The Sequence and The Funky 4+1. They scored a few hits with "Funk You Up," "Simon Says," and "That's the Joint," which used a nice sample from my girl Cheryl Lynn's song "Got To Be Real." We'll be taking her song apart and putting it back together again in another chapter of this book series, "What Is A Song."

Bambaataa's affiliations included the Rock Steady Crew and Double Dutch Girls. There was also a spray-painting graffiti artist who parlayed his love for 'visual art' into being the host of a popular show that engaged the minds of America's Black and White youth. It ended up changing Rap music history all over the world. Now with a 'retired' can of spray paint, Yo MTV Raps' Fab 5 Freddy was also a key player in the classic film, "New Jack City." There'll be more on that captured moment in time a little later, after we finish up with Afrika Bambaataa (& friends), and dig further into the chapter: there's some real meat in thar! That's what's up.

Def Jam product began flowing through shortly after I jumped in the big game to see if I could swim. I witnessed the music of many groundbreaking artists 'rushed' through the system. Notable executives like Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles entered the fold, as promoters like Wes Johnson and Johnnie Walker locked down efforts to turn the airwaves into 'Def Jam radio.' Def Jam became one of the hottest commodities in distribution by the other major label within a major label.

Their chronicles defined the next wave of Hip-Hop and fashion by way of brimmed Fedoras, leather pants, blues jeans, and unlaced, Adidas sneakers. During the winter, they sported snorkels with fur around the hood. In New York winters of the 70s, we sported hats like Kangols (still popular) and 'Robin Hoods'(with side feathers) on the dome. Some folks liked toboggins and ski caps for their 'masking' feature. Brooklyn later picked up a pseudonym--Crooklyn. Our 70s fashion also consisted of colorful silk shirts (Versace predecessors), polyester pants with stitched pleats running down the sides called Swedish Knits, and bell-bottom blue jeans with zippers at the foot.

Afrika Bambaataa was homegrown in the Bronx. He is best-known for taking the radical, independent factions of the Hip-Hop lifestyle and organizing it all into an urban music society...and for being the first rapper, ever. In 1984, he worked on the song "Unity" with the recently departed Godfather of Soul, James Brown. (We're gonna miss ya, 'Soul Brother #1.') By mixing block parties with DJs and break-dancers, he synergized all the varying entities of Hip-Hop through his Zulu Nation. The Zulus educated inner-city youth about their history and empowered them to be productive citizens. His ears were open to all types of music as he became a catalyst for blending rhythmic styles from Africa with Funk, Go-Go, Jazz, Reggae, Rock, Salsa and Soca for the first time in music history.

Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay un-laced their Adidas and went on to re-make Rock group Aerosmith's classic "Walk This Way," then invited the original rockers to get in on it. Along the way, Run-DMC sold a 'few million' records. In the background was one Russell Simmons, pushing buttons on his remote control. Then he got a cellphone. But before groups like Run-DMC made it to the game, there was one of the first major league rappers--Afrika Bambaataa. Oh yeah; along with his group The Soulsonic Force, Bambaataa fired off a ground-breaking shot remembered as being 'most strategically launched' from the annals of New York's urban jungle.

This record company made its mark by using a red trademark on the product it manufactured. Columbia Records was the big brother of Def Jam: the hottest Rap label in the Hip-Hop market. Def Jam had million-selling acts like LL Cool J, Public Enemy, The Beastie Boys, and later arrivals like DMX, then Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella Records. Columbia, also known as "Big Red," was owned by music giant CBS Records. By 1991,Cheap alienware, CBS Records was purchased by the Sony Corporation for some $2 billion that I'll say came out of the 'petty cash fund' (they had OLD money, and plenty of it). Now let's connect the dots with Sugar Hill: Back in 1957, a group called Mickey & Sylvia recorded a Bo Diddley song, "Love Is Strange." Guitarist Mickey Baker and a vocalist named Sylvia Vanderpool established themselves in the music market as a potential hit-making duo. In 1964, Sylvia married a man named Joe Robinson. Their union led to the formation of a legacy that wouldn't play itself fully out until the Rap craze hit. In 1973, Sylvia rolled the dice and released a huge hit, "Pillow Talk." This song established a format that would be followed straight into the Disco heydays. Originally written for Al Green, his pass became Sylvia's score when it tallied up a #1 R&B and #3 Pop hit. "Pillow Talk" was a sexy song that featured lots of heavy breathing, whispers, sighs and moans. It's reminiscent of Donna Summer's classic hit, "Love to Love You Baby."

Using finance money from Roulette Records chief Morris Levy (you can find out more about this guy in the book "Hit Men"--a highly-recommended favorite of mine. "I could tell you more, but..." You know the drill. As Sugar Hill grew, so did its artist roster, with the addition of Grandmaster Flash and his collective unit, The Furious Five. Although the Sugar Hill owners paid up a big balance and purchased the remaining interest in their company by the early 80's, things began to sour for them: a deal with MCA Records died and a fire toasted their legendary studio. The label eventually shut it doors by 1986.

As vice-president and national director respectively, Vernon and Mike implemented the national strategies set forth by Columbia. The staff consisted of dozens of regional promotion people strategically placed in key American cities. Throughout my career at the label Vernon, Mike, and the promotion people I knew showed me plenty of love, and were first-class players in the game, too. Not long after Def Jam's arrival, I became an account service rep, then a Black music marketing rep for Sony's southeast regional branch in Atlanta. I doubt if there was any connection. Anyway, Def Jam left Sony for PolyGram in 1994 (also the year that I parted company with Sony and launched a recording studio); that same year, PolyGram purchased 50% of Sony's holdings in Def JaWhen photographer Peter Lippmann hired when the group had laid the advertising success.

Afrika Bambaataa became a major music producer in his own right. He spent a lot of time logged in at Tommy Boy Records between 1982 and 2005. While there, he produced a huge hit for the New York club and radio scene, 1982's "Funky Sensation." To me, that song defined a new era of music for both myself and the City of New York. "Funky Sensation" helped to establish a path that many dance music producers followed, well into the new millennium. FORECAST: After looking at all the data, I am confident that the Northeast will see a significant increase in storms that will produce a various amount of impacts for the Northeast. A very volatile winter can be expected with wild swings in temperatures from week to week, day to day, and even hour to hour. In short, hold on to your seat because this is going to be a bumpy ride. This weather pattern can either follow a zonal pattern (jet stream is flat and goes west to east) or ends in a zonal pattern.

Given my forecast for a negative NAO this year, I feel we will see patterns similar to the first illustration.

NEGATIVE NAO PATTERN: In this pattern, a significant east coast storm can develop. First, notice the trough in the Gulf of Alaska. This trough is caused by the Aleutian low. The trough's eastern side slams into the Pacific Northwest bringing cold and stormy conditions. A large ridge develops over the interior West and Plains states in response to the deep trough in the Pacific. This produces a strong north to northwesterly flow out of the arctic into the Great Lakes and Northeast. The negative NAO, which is seen here producing a strong ridge over Greenland and a closed low over the Canadian Maritime. This blocking locks in the cold air over the Northeast and allows disturbances to slow down and develop into significant storms. In some cases,Bags are not a modern item, the southeast ridge will try to redevelop, which could enhance storm development.

La Nina's impact on the overall climate is most significant from the West coast of North America through the Southeastern United States. While the development of a La Nina is important to observe for the Northeast, the feature is not the main driving feature for the winter.

Other Interesting Indicators: I also want to point out a few other interesting features that are showing up. Notice on the SST anomaly map, that sea surface temperatures are running well above normal off the Mid Atlantic coast. The coastal waters of the Delmarva Peninsula down to the Carolinas are usually a key area of development for winter storms. The reason for this is the natural thermal gradient seen between air temperature and sea temperature and the difference in sea temperatures from the Gulf Stream and the immediate coast of the eastern United States. These differences in temperatures, which can span anywhere from 10 to 40 degrees or more is like jet fuel for a developing low pressure system. In this case, this interaction will be amplified by the above normal readings we are seeing. The result is a focus of cyclogenesis off the East coast and specifically off the Delmarva coastline.

La Nina forms due to the strengthening of the Easterlies along the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone. This strengthening forces the warmer water to the west and allows upwelling off the coast of South America.

POSITIVE NAO PATTERN: The Pacific air mass dominates the United States. The Aluetian low is further to the west and forces a ridge into eastern Pacific. This leads to a deep trough in the western and central United States. However, with a lack of blocking due to a positive NAO, the coldest air will remain over Canada, while mild temperatures are experienced over much of the nation. With the blocking from the negative NAO gone, the southeast ridge is free to build and ends up dominating the Eastern United States.

As we head into November,Cheap macbook, it is time to take a more in depth look at the winter. What should the Northeast expect and why. Along with some interesting insight on how weather patterns will develop. A focus will be on the New York City and Philadelphia region.

The NAO: The North Atlantic Oscillation or NAO is a dominant winter climate variable for the North Atlantic, western Europe, and eastern North America. For some odd reason, the NAO rarely gets a lot of media attention, even though the development of a positive or negative NAO is extremely important for long, medium,Discount iphone 5, and short term forecasting for the Eastern, specifically Northeastern United States. So what is the NAO?

This produces a strong ridge over Greenland and parts of northeastern Canadaand a trough over the southern Canadian Maritime and Northeastern United States. This feature produces blocking or slowing of the weather pattern,according to the research, which can lead to significant storm development over the East coast. Further, this position of the upper level features allows confluence over southeastern Canada, which basically leads to cold high pressure developing and locking in over interior New England and southeastern Canada.

Conclusion and Storm Track Overview: I expect a volatile and stormy winter in the Northeastern United States. The storm tracks will be impacted by three main features, the Aleutian low position, the Southeast Ridge position, and the state of the NAO. When the NAO goes negative combined with a strong Aleutian low, the result will be cold and stormy conditions with a storm track running from the Plains to the Mid Atlantic coastal waters. However, when the NAO goes positive, the southeast ridge will dominate and force the storm track towards the St. Lawrence River Valley and western New England bringing warm and wet conditions.

When forecasting the NAO,discount macbook, I look at two sources. The first is the excellent research by Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre, UCL (University of London, UK.
